There isn't much that needs to be said about the Sony Playstation 2,
since everybody and their brother is familiar with this long-lived
competitor of the Sega Dreamcast and the Microsoft X-Box. As of
August 2008, over 138 million unit have been sold worldwide.
Unique controllers available for the various games include a chainsaw
(for Resident Evil 4), guitars and a drum set (for
Guitar Heros), light guns, fishing rods and reels, dance
pads, microphones and even a digital camera called EyeToy.
Accessories include a USB mouse and keyboard, memory cards, internal
and external hard disk drives and a network adapter (which is built in
to the later slim model).
Mod chips, which allow users to play homebrew and import games, have
long been available for numerous vide game systems, but new to the
PS2 is the ability to run the Linux operating system. Doing so
requires the use of a hard disk drive, though, so the slim line model
would be left out, were it not for the fact that some mod chips allow
for the use of a USB hard drive.
Currently, I own both the original design as well as the slim line
model with the orignal controllers. I also have two radio-frequency
wireless controllers and two light guns.
Sony has a different Owner's Manual for each model.
