I know to be technical, this is not a true computer but I could not
pass this deal up when I found it at the Thrift Store today - like
new, still in the original box for only $5! This is similar to the
Flytech Pen Computer in that it will
record what ever you write so that you can upload it to your computer
for editing and storage. Unlike the Flytech, though, this doesn't do
any real computation - no games, no MP3 player, nothing fancy. What
it does have over the Flytech, however, is the fact that it uses
standard paper - no microdots or special encoding.
This, like everything else, is designed to be used with Mico$oft
Windows-based computers. If you are one of us - the Linux users -
you will need to click on the
ETES Converter
website to download their perl-based converter script. I have
modified this open-source script so that the '--pdf' option is no
longer required - PDF is the default output filetype. You must have
ps2pdf installed for this (and the original '--pdf' option) to work.
Also, in the original script, the file extension was case-sensitive.
Linux sees the files on the DigiMemo as uppercase letters. Since the
script expected the extension to be .dhw, it couldn't delete that
portion of the filename and the output came out PAGE_001.DHW.pdf
instead. I have made the script search for either case. You can
download my modified script
here.
