Much like the Atari 2600 and the Intellivision, the ColecoVision
is an 8-bit video games system that plays games stored on removable
cartidges. Although the game cartidges are of a proprietary format,
there is an adapter available ( which I do not have - hint, hint)
that allows you to further expand the systems usability through the
use of Atari 2600 games.
The controllers feature a twelve button keypad, two fire buttons and
a 8-axis analog joystick. Both are tethered to the console using a
three foot coiled cord, although they can be unplugged and replaced
with standard Atari 2600 joystick - although with obvious reduced
functionality.
There were three expansion modules created and released for the
ColecoVision, the first being the 2600 adapter module. The second
is a driving controller with a steering wheel and pedal controls. The
Third is, in my opinion, the most impressive. It converts the video
game system into a full featured Coleo ADAM computer system complete
with a keyboard and digital cassette deck for program storage. Not to
mention that it is rumoured that the ADAM expansion module was to
incorporate an RCA CED player to allow for more storage. Any one who
knows me know how impressed I am with the RCA CED SelectaVision player
technology.
