Unfortunately, when I was a kid, I had a habit of selling one
system at local Hamfests to buy a newer model. While I was able to experience a wide
variety of computer systems, I regret no longer owning these wonderful computers. I am
looking to replace this if anyone has one they would like to get rid of...
This system came complete with a keyboard, a light gun, a joystick and two game
cartridges - Flight Simulator 2 and Bug Hunt. You needed something to use that
keyboard and that light gun for, after all! To add to the appeal, the Atari XE was
fully compatible with all of the peripherals already available to the 400 and the
800. This included disk drives, tape drives and printers.
Contrary to most of the reviews that I have read online, I found the XEGS to be a
capable computer for it's time. Granted, I was 13 at the time, but this wasn't my
first computer. Even then, I was pretty well versed in computerese. Shortly after I
received this as a Christmas present (I had talked my mother into giving me the
manuals a month early so I could study them), I found a BASIC programming cartridge.
That in itself made this system worth it in my book. I don't even remember if I had
any other cartridges or not. But I do remember writing numerous (at the time and IMHO)
fantastic programs.
From the little information I can gleam from the net, there were 75 or so games
released for this on cartridge, but if you purchased a floppy disk drive, you could
run all of the software written for the previous 400 and 800 XE/XL systems. Believe
it or not, a simple search on Google reveals numerous sites where you can download
software for these systems!
