This game system should need no introduction. The Atari 2600 is probably the most
famous of all computer game systems - selling around 400 million units
during it's lifespan. At just over fourteen years, this was the longest run of any
game system ever sold in the United States.
Of the 900 plus games created for the 2600, I only have about 50. I'll have to go
through them and compile a list to post here when I get a chance. One cartridge that
I know I have right off hand is the BASIC programming cartridge and the keypad
controllers that came with it. I bought this combination at KB Toys years ago when
they were selling all of their 2600 games off as clearance for $5. It was so cool.
My dad's favorite was StarMaster. I think he really just enjoyed watching the star
field streak past!
I still have at least two of the original units I had as a kid - one woodgrain with
the six switches and one "Darth Vader" black version with four switches. In the four
switch version, the two difficulty switches were relocated to the back of the
console. I also have several of the original joysticks (as well as the dome switches
used to repair them), a pair of the paddle controllers and of course to keypads. I
understand that a wireless joystick was released that was compatible with the 2600
and the 7800. If anyone has a pair of these, with the receivers, that you'd
like to get rid of, please let me know!
I found a set of wireless joysticks on eBay bundled with a
complete 2600 system. After replacing the switch domes they
work perfectly! The base of the joystick is about twice as thick
as a standard controller with a six inch antenna sticking out of
the front of the base. Each transmitter runs on a 9v battery.
The receiver is about the same size with a telescoping antenna
on the rear of it. You plug the game systems 9vdc power supply
into the receiver, and then cables feed power to the console
and connect it to the joystick ports. Totally cool...
