October 15th, 1990
Original Price:
$999
Processor:
Motorola 68000 @ 8 MHz

1 MB RAM / 512 KB ROM
Although the Classic was marketed as the successor to the Macintosh Plus, it didn't
offer much improvement over the old design. It featured the same 9" monochrome CRT
with a 512x342 pixel display, the same 4 MB memory limit and a lack of expansion
ports. The only upgrades that the new system sported was a 25% faster processor
and the addition of the Apple SuperDrive 3½" floppy drive as standard equipment.
This allowed the Classic to read and write to Macintosh, MS-DOS, OS/2 and ProDOS
diskettes. For $500 more, you could get an additional 1 MB memory expansion card
and a 40 MB SCSI hard drive. The intended operating system was System 6.0.7,
although all versions up to and including System 7.5.5 were supported.
